Mezzanine comments on Marketing Strategy
in Financial Post Magazine
(Jul 09, 2009) In the July 9th issue of Financial Post
Magazine, Abena Rodwell-Simon and Lisa
Shepherd provide guidance for small
business owners on the best ways to
manage a marketing strategy during a
recession. Shepherd, CEO and founder
of
Mezzanine and Rodwell-Simon, a
director,
warn that if marketing is ignored
coming
out of the recession, sales
opportunities will go astray. Some
guidelines they provide:
1. Don’t Lose Sight of your Existing
Clients
2. Be Selective
3. Stick with It (marketing often
takes 6–12 months to show results)

Mezzanine Offers ‘PainlessPromotion’
Tips in Profit Magazine
(Mar 16, 2009) Leah Andrew and Lisa Shepherd of
Mezzanine Consulting discuss ‘Marketing
More with Less’ in the March issue of
Profit Magazine. The article discusses
the tendency for cash-strapped business
owners to reduce sales and marketing
activities in an economic downturn.
But
Andrew and Shepherd argue that
companies
don’t need to take this approach.
Despite tight budgets, companies can
maintain or even increase their
marketing by using low-cost and
innovative techniques.

Shepherd delivers keynote at Company of
Women Event
(Feb 25, 2009) On February 25th, the Company of Women
gathered at Toronto’s Verity Club to
discuss the challenges of growing a
small business. Lisa Shepherd
delivered
the keynote address, “Growing Pains and
Taking your Business to the Next
Level”.
Shepherd shared her experience in
launching Mezzanine Consulting, a
Toronto-based market intelligence and
marketing planning firm that was named
one of the Fastest Growing Companies in
Canada in 2007 and 2008 by Profit
Magazine.
Shepherd shared the story of
Mezzanine’s
evolution from a student summer
consultancy in 2001 to a leader in
customer insight and market assessment
for clients like HP, Intel, Bell,
Rogers
and Capital One Canada. Rather than
focusing on all the right things that
happened along the way and allowed the
company to succeed, the emphasis of the
evening was on the challenges that all
new businesses face, and some of the
mistakes that were made along the way.
As Shepherd said, “So often it’s the
success story that we hear and how
companies get to the top. But
ultimately there are many things that
go
wrong and companies must overcome in
order to survive. I find I learn even
more from hearing those stories, and
want to share some of what I’ve learned
in the last 8 years.”
Shepherd encouraged the group to
remember that, “growing a business is a
few steps forward, a few steps back,
the
occasional big leap and the occasional
tumble”.
The Company of Women was begun by Anne
Day eight years ago in an effort to
connect women in business. The group
has over 350 members and holds monthly
meetings plus regular retreats, dinners
and golf tournaments for women in
various stages of their professional
life.

To MBA or Not? Mezzanine speaks on
Entrepreneurs Panel
(Jan 15, 2009) On January 15th, Lisa Shepherd joined a
panel of 4 graduates of the MBA program
at the Richard Ivey School of Business
who each now run successful businesses.
Their purpose was to discuss the role
of
formal education in the making of their
careers. The event was hosted by
Ivey’s
Institute for Entrepreneurship for
prospective MBAs who wanted to better
understand if an MBA would serve them
effectively.
The panelists included
Pierre L.
Morrissette: President and CEO of
Pelmorex Media Inc. (The Weather
Network), Deland Jessop: Co-Founder of
PolicePrep (police and fire entrance
program preparation), Alexa Nick:
Founding Partner of myPractice (online
professional practice management),
Jonathan Shell: Managing Director and
Co-Founder of Vet Strategy (veterinary
clinics), and Lisa Shepherd: Mezzanine
Consulting (market intelligence and
marketing planning). The group
discussed how an MBA had
served their careers, the role that
other jobs and positions had played,
and
whether they’d do it all again. The
audience of about 60 people had many
questions, including whether
entrepreneurs really need an MBA. The
panel summed up their view that an MBA
education had helped them make good
decisions as entrepreneurs and had
provided them with strong networks that
accelerated their success – but
ultimately an MBA is not a
make-or-break
component of a successful
entrepreneurial career.

(Sep 19, 2005) More Canadian professionals are
experiencing high 'role overload' than
ever before. The number has grown over
25% since the early 90s, to 59% from 47%
of employed Canadians. Professionals and
managers in medium and large
organizations are especially crunched,
as their organizations become leaner and
they face constant pressure to
outperform.

“Great job. You delivered a solid work
product and financial model. The summary
information is well structured and easy
to understand and your presentation of
the material was succinct and
insightful. You clearly developed and
demonstrated a sound understanding of
our market in a short period of time."

“Mezzanine delivered exceptional value
for our not-for-profit organization. As
a former strategy consultant, I was
worried that Mezzanine's final product
would not be actionable. The opposite
was true - there were so many incredible
and actionable recommendations that we
now get to cherry pick the best ones.”
- David Resnick Board Member and Chair of Fundraising
Committee, Future Possibilities Canada |

"EPCOR was very pleased with the way
Mezzanine researched a number of key
issues in the Ontario market. They
helped us develop a better view of the
opportunites and competitive landscape
that existed. We have already
recommended them to our partners."
